PM takes part in GCC interior ministers' meet

Prime Minister and Minister of Interior HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al Thani participated in the opening session of 17th Consultative Meeting of GCC Interior Ministers in Riyadh on Wednesday.

On arrival in Riyadh, the prime minister and his accompanying delegation were welcomed at Riyadh Air Base Airport by Saudi Arabia Crown Prince, Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Prince Mohammed bin Nayef bin Abdulaziz al Saud, GCC Secretary-General Dr Abdullatif bin Rashid al Zayani, Qatar's Ambassador to Saudi Arabia HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Thamer al Thani and staff of the Qatari embassy.

Addressing the meeting, Saudi Crown Prince, Deputy Premier and Minister of Interior Mohammed bin Naif bin Abdulaziz said that security and stability enjoyed in the GCC states contributed to creating the appropriate environment for achieving economic, social and cultural development, at a time when most of the region's countries witness turbulent security and difficult economic conditions.

He called on the GCC member states to increase their efforts and strengthen cooperation as well as expand consultation and coordination between GCC security agencies.

"We are facing great challenges and unprecedented and serious criminal phenomena. Maintaining security is a joint national and religious requirement," he added.

He thanked the security personnel in all the GCC member states for their sacrifices in the service of religion, homelands and peoples.

In his speech, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Secretary-General Dr Abdullatif al Zayani expressed pride in security cooperation among GCC states which has succeeded in fighting crime and terrorism.

He said that GCC General Secretariat is closely following the updates on the emergency risk plans in GCC states, adding that the GCC Centre for Emergency Management continues holding specialised training workshops in order to raise the capability and awareness as well as coordination between the member states.

He also congratulated Qatar's Prime Minister and Minister of Interior HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al Thani and Oman's Interior Minister Hamoud bin Faisal al Busaidi on signing of a security cooperation agreement between Qatar and Oman.

The ministers later held a closed session to discuss mechanisms of security coordination in line with the requirements of the GCC joint action.

Earlier, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz al Saud of Saudi Arabia met with Prime Minister and Minister of Interior HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al Thani along with other GCC ministers of interior.

The meeting reviewed relations between the GCC member states. The Saudi crown prince later hosted a luncheon banquet in honour of the visiting ministers of interior.
