THE Museum of Islamic Art Park, a scenic location in the city, was the backdrop for the inauguration of the Create and Inspire art competition on Friday.

A graffiti workshop facilitated by Brazilian artist Alexandre Orion was the highlight of the event. It aimed to inspire artists of all ages.

The competition is being organised by the Crossway Foundation in partnership with the Qatar Museums Authority and Art Jameel. Valeria Mariani, Project Manager for the Crossway Foundation, told Qatar Tribune that the competition was intended to contribute to the local art scene by uncovering talented youngsters.

She said,"The competition aims to find young artists in Qatar as well as in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and the UK. The 12 competition winners from these four countries will participate in a two-week creative journey to Brazil in September."

There, they will work with professional artists, photographers, curators, filmmakers and musicians to develop key leadership skills, communication and creativity. The team will travel to Rio de Janeiro, S\'e3o Paulo, Inhotim and Salvador to explore Brazil's landscapes, experience its vibrant art scene and collaborate with local artists and organisations.

The Crossway Foundation is a UK-based charity delivering arts and education initiatives for young people in the UK and the Middle East. The charity has been organising this competition since 2011 and last year, more than 500 youngsters participated.

Outlining the charity's objectives, Mariani said,"We work mainly to promote a better understanding between the UK and the Middle East through art. We're based in a gallery space, and from there, we run events including workshops, film viewings, and, of course, these competitions to find young talent."

Competition participants are to submit a creative project, either an artwork, film, photograph or sound recording which relates to the theme, کThe world is not black and white'. Brazil conjures up images of carnival, tropical rainforests, beaches and capoeira, and is known as one of the most colourful places on earth. This year's theme is about colour as a metaphor for a creative way of life.
