Tattoos can help you prevent getting sick

A couple of tattoos has been found to strengthen the immune system, says a new study. The researchers from the University of Alabama has found that getting a couple of tattoos can help the body build its immune system. They explain that when a body is first introduced to a new routine or a foreign contaminant, like getting inked, it weakens. But the body strengthens as it recuperates from the pain.

"They don't just hurt while you get the tattoo, but they can exhaust you. It's easier to get sick. You can catch a cold because your defences are lowered from the stress of getting a tattoo," said Christopher Lynn, co-author of the study, which was published in the American Journal of Human Biology.

"After the stress response, your body returns to an equilibrium. However, if you continue to stress your body over and over again, instead of returning to the same set point, it adjusts its internal set points and moves higher," added Lynn. By studying participants after they got inked, twice, they measured the levels of immunoglobulin A, an antibody, and cortisol, the stress hormone, decreased.

This they got from getting blood samples from the participants. At the initial tattooing, the levels of immunoglobulin A decreased, but it gets smaller as the tattoo finishes. The immunoglobulin A is the first to defend the body from common infections and also protects the digestive and respiratory systems. This means that a higher of level of these immunoglobulin is equivalent to an infection. Though getting a tattoo may not be the optimal way to get yourself protection from diseases, at least those with tattoos have already gained this benefit. For those who are still contemplating on getting a tattoo, just make sure that your tattoo artist is licensed, uses safe and unused needles, and chooses your designs carefully. It is painful to get a tattoo but it is more painful to have them erased.
