The Qatar Chapter of the Arab Women in Computing Association (ArabWIC) held its first outreach event in Qatar on Saturday.

The event, titled 'Django Girls', was a free workshop for female university students who have never coded before. It aimed at equipping them with the computing skills needed to develop websites or blogs.

The workshop was jointly organised by the Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI) and ictQatar's Digital Incubation Center (DIC).

Dr Eman Fituri, director of Educational Initiatives from QCRI, said:"QCRI is committed to promoting computer science education in Qatar. We are pleased to partner with Arab Women in Computing in organising this workshop and giving the local young ladies who have no previous experience in coding, an opportunity to learn how to program and how to create their own websites."

Designed for university students who are not studying ICT, but are curious about how to create websites or blogs, the workshop gathered around 40 participants selected through a competitive application process. Attendees worked in groups of three, paired with an experienced coach, to create online platforms using HTML, CSS, Python and Django.

Duha al Buhendi from DIC said,"Django Girls is a very good opportunity for girls to learn the basics of creating a website or blog, especially for those who would like to share their creativity in future. As the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology's Digital Incubation Center, dedicated to develop tech entrepreneurship in Qatar, we are happy to partner with Arab Women in Computing in this workshop and look forward to working with such initiatives."
